Carthage College Faculty Meeting Minutes
April 5, 2012 — 4:00 p.m.
CALL TO ORDER
Provost Julio Rivera called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m.
Ross Larson prefaced the invocation with a short introductory talk on the elements of the festival days of the Easter season. He then invited the congregation to engage in an “inclusive prayer.”
FACULTY TENURE ANNOUNCEMENT
Provost Julio Rivera announced the names of faculty who were awarded tenure: Karin Sconzert, Dan Choffnes, Wenjie Sun, Ed Montanaro, Paul Kirkland, John Isham, and Seemee Ali.
CONVERSATION WITH THE PRESIDENT
The President announced that Ross Larson was moved from Acting Chapel Dean to the rank of Dean of the Chapel.
President Campbell then proceeded by asking for questions from the audience. Ross Larson asked about the proceedings of the calendar for the remainder of the academic year. The President reviewed several of the major events for the remaining year. This included an overview of the provision of the new president’s opportunity to begin an orientation to the beginnings of his duties at Carthage.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF SEPT. 2, 2011
Julio Rivera then asked for an acceptance of the minutes of the last meeting. The move was approved and passed.
Aaron Trautwein then spoke about the operations of the Academic Committees Organization. This was supplemented with a PowerPoint display in the form of a flow-chart draft of proposal # 3. He then identified the four major committees on campus which are: Academic Committees, Quality of Life, Budget and Compensation, Personnel & Tenure.
Course Approval and Curriculum Oversight models were shown to be revised from the old CPC. An administrative committee was identified as an additional arm of the chart.
Dr. Trautwein then stated that he would proceed to write up the details of the proposed committee’s model and submit such in a form to be voted upon at the upcoming May meeting.
Deanna Byrnes then proposed 4 new courses. All were voted upon and passed.
Greg Baer, Dennis Munk, and Dana Garrigan announced a course planning workshop for faculty members. Course planning, organization, proposals for revisions, etc., were discussed. Also, a conference about Teaching and Learning was announced to be upcoming in the fall term of the academic year (actually August). Accreditation schedule was also identified, looking toward 2014 when the accreditation committee comes to campus. The faculty committee for this task includes Bill Abt, Joy Mast, Tom Powers, Karin Sconzert, and Rick Matthews.
