It is the sense of the faculty that: The tradition of full-time faculty appointments to departments and programs, including the Heritage and Great Ideas Programs, should be respected and that hiring primarily for the purpose of staffing the new Heritage Program pilot should cease. Moreover, the faculty asks the President to follow the established faculty hiring guidelines laid out in college documents, and join the faculty in the collegial process regarding such matters.
Rationale: Departmental needs are not currently being taken into account when hiring for the new Heritage Program pilot or the Great Ideas Program. Rather than hiring a person for Heritage and then approaching a department about fit, departments and programs should, as has been the normal mechanism, submit hiring requests with the understanding that anyone hired for that department will teach in the Heritage Program, but primary teaching responsibilities will be in the home department or program. This is a return to the past when everyone hired by the College was expected to teach in the Heritage Program regardless of their departmental or program appointment. Additionally, full-time hires for the Great Ideas Program should not be permitted as a way to specifically staff the new Heritage pilot program.
Eric Kulke – Study Abroad Committee next fall; golf outing.
Alane Spinney and Dick Sjoerdsma are leaving.
The meeting adjourned at 1:02 p.m.
