CARTHAGE COLLEGE FACULTY MEETING MINUTES
September 3, 2004
Dean Piepenburg called the meeting to order at 8:40 a.m.
Pastor Stephens delivered the invocation.
Minutes of the May 6, 2004 meeting were approved as written.
REPORT ON INCOMING CLASS
Brenda Poggendorf reported on the figures for this year’s enrollment. Alan Wallace, Charlotte Chell, and Ruth Fangmeier asked follow-up questions.
INTRODUCTION OF CHINESE TEACHING DELEGATION
Marian Rothstein presented the ten Chinese educators who will be in residence at the College. Each member of the Chinese delegation said a few words, and President Campbell thanked them personally.
CONVERSATION WITH THE PRESIDENT
President Campbell welcomed the new faculty and emphasized their strong collective credentials. He reported on the state of the endowment and the College’s capital resources.
INTRODUCTION OF NEW COLLEAGUES
New members of the staff and faculty were introduced and welcomed to Carthage.
Kurt Piepenburg announced that Emeritus status had been granted to Dan Jurkovic and Phil Powell.
REPORTS OF COMMITTEES
Jim Lochtefeld, the new chair of the FEC, introduced the committee’s new members. The committee plans to continue last year’s emphasis on interdisciplinary studies, campus
diversity, and technical support for faculty. Chris Von Dehsen was nominated and unanimously elected to the position of parliamentarian for another year. Richard Heitman was announced as a parliamentarian-in-training.
Curriculum Planning Committee
Dan Schowalter presented a plea to the faculty for honoring deadlines for new course approvals.
ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION
Christine Rener announced that she would be reporting later in the day at the Faculty Workshop.
Aaron Trautwein announced his continued involvement in the United Way Fund.
Greg Baer announced the formation of the Wisconsin Private Colleges Initiative for Diversity and a team for promoting more Fulbright scholarships among Carthage students.
Dick Sjoerdsma announced upcoming concerts.
Dean Piepenburg announced that the ceremony installing Harvard Stevens as the Dean of the Chapel will be held September 12th at 10:30 a.m.
