Thomas Kline serves Carthage College as Chief of Staff and Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and is currently filling in as Acting Vice President for Institutional Advancement. He serves as an Officer of the College and on the President’s Cabinet.
In the capacity of Chief of Staff, Dr. Kline represents the President and meets regularly with faculty, staff, and administrators to manage college operations. He oversees the development, implementation, and assessment of the College’s strategic plan, Carthage in the Year 2025, chairs the Space Planning and Capital Expenditure Committee and Emergency Response Management Committee, and serves as staff liaison to the Strategic Planning and Review Committee of the Board of Trustees.
In the role of Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, Dr. Kline explores and executes special projects for the College. He is currently leading the Task Force for Career and Professional Development, which seeks to establish Carthage as a national model in this area. Past projects include launching a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, developing Carthage in Chicago, strategic enrollment and retention initiatives, emergency response management, and various international initiatives.
In April 2017, Dr. Kline began overseeing the Office of Institutional Advancement. He led the final stage of the Campaign for Carthage, which raised over $47 million, and launched The Tower Initiative, a one-year fundraising campaign in support of a new residence hall. Dr. Kline also led the on-boarding of Carthage’s new president, John Swallow, overseeing a series of Meet the President events, the President’s Inauguration, and serving as vice chair of the Presidential Transition Advisory Committee.
From 2014-2016, Dr. Kline oversaw the Office of Continuing Studies, which includes a portfolio of programs that serves over 800 nontraditional students, including Graduate Studies, Adult Undergraduate Studies, Professional Studies, and international programs. He supervised all staff, managed operations, and provided vision and leadership for developing new programs.
From August 2015 until February 2016, Dr. Kline served as Interim Dean of Students, where he oversaw the Office of Student Life, which includes residential life, the health and counseling center, student discipline, student activities, student government, multicultural affairs, leadership development programs, and student organizations.
Before arriving at Carthage, Dr. Kline served the Ithaca College School of Music (New York) as Director of Music Admissions and Preparatory Programs. In this capacity, he oversaw undergraduate and graduate admissions, recruitment, financial aid, marketing, and international initiatives, and he founded the Preparatory Division, which includes the Summer Music Academy.
Before his career in higher education, Dr. Kline spent seven years as a professional percussionist and drummer within various pop, rock, jazz, Latin, and classical ensembles, performing about 150 times each year. He also maintained a private percussion studio, founded an artist management agency called Third Encore Entertainment, and worked as a consultant for Signature Music, a non-profit music organization.
Dr. Kline holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Science in Communications and Bachelor of Music with an Outside Field in Business, both from Ithaca College. He currently resides with his wife Gina, daughter Leah, and son Preston in Bristol, WI.
