As a Registered Environmental Health Specialist for the state of Minnesota, Loreena (Lair) Hilton ’10 must communicate with residents, property owners and other agencies. She traces that ability directly back to her liberal arts education at Carthage.
“Without some of my core concept classes that built my communication skills, I do not believe I would be as successful in my current position,” said Ms. Hilton.
Her department inspects restaurants, pools, homes and wells, among a wide range of responsibilities. She monitors homes for hoarding or other health dangers, and the agency can condemn homes if necessary.
Ms. Hilton, who is from Bloomington, Minnesota, gained valuable experience during an internship with a local health department shortly after she graduated. She credits the Carthage Biology Department for building the knowledge base to enter her field.
