Karen Howell is the Director of Community Engagement at Carthage. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Carthage in 1983 and has spent her career in non-profit and higher education program management. In 2012, Karen joined the College’s staff as the Executive Assistant to the President.
In addition to her work supporting the President, she developed several formal community partnerships, created a decentralized continuum model for the College’s community engagement activities, and implemented a college-wide data collection and reporting process. She has presented Carthage’s work on campus and regionally. In 2017, she joined the Career Services team to continue her work in a full-time capacity.

In her role with the Career Service’s team, Karen manages Carthage’s community engagement initiatives. Her work includes cultivating, implementing, supporting, and evaluating programs and partnerships, which enhance student learning and support a continuum of community student engagement activities. She also oversees student employment recruiting.
Favorite thing about working at Carthage
Karen says that her favorite thing about working at Carthage is “having the opportunity to give back to an institution which gave me so much.”
Her other interests include watching her favorite sports teams — including the Red Men and Lady Reds!
