Give three words that sum up your internship experience.
Adventure-filled, improvisational, exciting.
How did you learn about your internship?
“I learned about Hawthorn Hollow when I started looking into the Great Lakes Internship program.”
Describe your internship.
“I have done lots of things; my main focus was learning a two hour field trip plan for elementary school kids about seeds, how they’re important, and how they travel. Other duties include: cutting down and clearing trees, getting supplies for the field trips, and making new and better plans for the other field trips that are offered seasonally.”
What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?
“I really enjoy getting to work with the kids that come on field trips. They have so much fun and they love being a part of something out in nature; you see their eyes light up as they find some different sort of seed or when they find out that they get to grind up an apple. The little things matter to them in a huge way. In the same vein, the field trips are the most challenging because you have to deal with so many children at once, as well as make sure you keep them interested and their energy at a manageable level. It’s very much going with the flow and assessing moment by moment what needs to be done.”
How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?
“I plan on teaching English in South Korea after I graduate, so running these field trips is sort of a trial run for teaching and it prepares me to learn to roll with how kids think, as well as what approaches to dynamic teaching work and which approaches don’t work well.”
During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?
“I marketed myself honestly and wasn’t afraid to be a little quirky, because that’s my personality. Sometimes things that you don’t expect to help your interview do - my internship boss was totally convinced of my teaching abilities just because I am in an improvisational comedy group!”
What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?
“I found it helpful to have advice from the career center. I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for and they helped point me toward places I would never have considered, and that place is quite perfect for what I need in terms of experience.”
Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?
“Keep an open-mind and utilize all your resources. Career Services is super helpful finding cool new internships that you might not know about.”
