Julio Rivera is concerned with helping students understand and research “Big Data” problems and applying different methodologies to their work.  The area of data analytics he focuses on is “Business Geographics” as he integrates a variety of analytic tools in his teaching including Geographic Information Science (GIS), visualization techniques, statistical packages, and spreadsheet programs.  He brings the Business Geographics approach to his courses in Marketing, Statistics, GIS, Economic Geography, Data Analytics, and Visualization and challenges students to solve problems rather than memorize answers.

His current research focuses on the variation of real estate values in suburban communities examining how different built environments enhance the values of homes. This project is an extension of the work he did during a sabbatical at the Global Institute for Sustainability at Arizona State University, examining trends in housing development of the urban fringe in the Phoenix metropolitan area. He has directed numerous undergraduate student senior thesis projects, many of which were presented at regional and national conferences.

Rivera was the recipient of the 2002 Carthage College Distinguished Teaching Award.  He traveled frequently with students to Ometepe Island, Nicaragua, as part of a service-learning course in the Geography and Biology of Nicaragua.  He has taught other travel courses including trips to India, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and Wisconsin.

He was named its volunteer of the year in 2005.  Rivera regularly serves as a consultant to other colleges and universities as they develop undergraduate research programs and he has worked in three National Science Foundation grant programs to expand undergraduate research opportunities for students.  He is a member of the steering group for the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) and was a keynote speaker at their conference in 2015 and Posters in Parliament in 2014..  He was the opening Keynote Speaker at the First World Congress of Undergraduate Research in Doha, Qatar, and is a member of the planning group for the 2019 Congress. 

Rivera serves as a consultant to government, business and higher education.  He has completed projects with Snap-on Tools, World Link Inc., Racine County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Racine Harbor Commission. He is the author of a number of papers and is a member of the American Marketing Association, Association of American Geographers, The Council on Undergraduate Research, Sigma Xi, National Council on Geographic Education, and he is a Peer Reviewer and a Mentor in the Assessment Academy for Student Learning at the Higher Learning Commission.

While at Carthage, Dr. Rivera has served at the Provost of the College overseeing all aspects of the College’s academic administration (2010-14).  He was the Chair of the Department of Geography and Earth Science (2000-10) where he founded, and developed the Geographic Information Science (GIS) program.  He also served as the College’s Acting Dean of Students during the 1999-2000 school year.  Prior to coming to Carthage, he taught Geography and GIS at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.  He has also worked as a Student Affairs administrator at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and The Ohio State University.

Julio Rivera earned his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and completed a post-doctorate in Management and Marketing at the Hough GraduateSchool of Business at the University of Florida.  He holds a M.A. in Higher Education and Student Affairs Enjoying an afternoon in Milwaukee HarborEnjoying an afternoon in Milwaukee Harborfrom The Ohio State University, and a B.A. in Journalism and Theology at Marquette University.

Outside of his work Dr. Rivera enjoys photography, sailing, hiking, and travel.  He particularly enjoys interesting urban spaces and finding small local diners and greasy spoons that serve great meals to good people every day.
