Nancy Gómez

Brief Biography

“I’m Nancy and I am from Bogota, Colombia where I have lived all my life. I have a B.A. in teaching Spanish and English from La Universidad Pedagógica Nacional in Bogotá. I have worked as a teacher for ten years and taught K-12 students and adult learners. I enjoy my job because I think teaching is the best way to change the society and to make the world a better place.”

Tell us about your hometown

“I was born in Bogota, Colombia. It is a very beautiful city that is called the “Athens of Latin America.” It is at an average of 2,640 meters (8,660 ft) above sea level. Currently, a skyscraper called Bacatá is being built there. It will be the second tallest building in South America. It also has a very important theater festival and many museums. People are very gentle and kind and they enjoy spending time visiting a place called “La Candelaria,” a historic district of Bogotá.”

Education and previous work experience

“I have a B.A. in teaching Spanish and English from La Universidad Pedagógica Nacional in Bogotá. I have taught English in elementary, middle, and high schools and have also taught adult learners. I also participated in a teaching project called “The use of images and songs for the teaching of English as a foreign language,” based on the theory of symbolism proposed by Piaget and the use of songs proposed by Alix Zorrillo.”

Why did you decide to become a TLE?

“I decided to come to Carthage College because this is an excellent college with many opportunities where you can develop cultural and intercultural competence. I also decided to be a TLE to get a master’s degree in education and have a new teaching experience that can help me to improve my teaching practice.”

Personal interests and accomplishments

“I like listening to music, reading, watching movies, and dancing. I love museums and astronomy. I´m looking forward to having a very good experience in the United States, especially at Carthage.”
