Give three words that sum up your internship experience.

Rewarding, educational, and diverse.

How did you learn about your internship?

I learned about Clearbrook while talking to other people from my hometown about what it is I am interested in and through researching internship opportunities in the field of social work near my house.

Describe your internship.

As an intern in the home based services department at Clearbrook I assist with a lot of the paperwork side of things. I assist coordinators with filing, monthly summaries and goal tracking, checking the billing report, and any other tasks that come up during my time there.

What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?

I have enjoyed getting to learn about what types of services are available in Illinois, and truly the lack of money allotted to these services. It has been very interesting to also learn more about the paperwork portion because documentation is very important in social work.

How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?

As a social work major, I have had semester long internships in the focus area of schools. This internship has given me the opportunity to learn about what types of services are offered in Illinois. This will be very beneficial as a school social worker in the future, because I will be better equipped to answer any family questions about what is available to their child.

During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?

While communicating with potential internship locations I was very upfront about what type of experience I have had. I have mainly had internships in schools and I wanted to broaden my horizons with my summer internship. I kept a very open mind and was willing to try my hand at any type of experience available.

What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?

I did research some locations online as well as talk with people in the field who live around me to get an idea as well. I believe that networking is so beneficial in internship and job searches because you get more of a personal connection with a location. You can also get deeper information about an organization than just through internet searches alone.

Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?

It is so important to be open minded while searching for an internship or a job. New experiences can help you decide what the right steps are for you.
