Staff Accountant Intern

Give three words that sum up your internship experience.

Responsible, Proactive, Engaging

How did you learn about your internship?

“Prof. Julie Dawson had sent out a mass email detailing the open position and if students were interested, they were encouraged to submit their resumes directly to the business.”

Describe your internship.

“Being that JB Tax provides many different services, my position specifically deals with tax and preparing tax returns for individual and business clients.”

What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?

“I enjoy the ability of being able to walk into the office, knowing that when I walk out, I will have learned something new that day. Whether through personal discovery or simply asking questions, there are always learning opportunities. One of the biggest challenges I face is being that I work remotely from Carthage when I am not in the office, I do not have the ability to ask questions as frequently or easily as I typically do. This forces me to write them down as a reference for when I am finally in the presence of my boss.”

How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?

“Interestingly enough, I did not pursue the accounting field so I am very fortunate to have been selected to take on this role. With that being said, it allows me to learn things I probably would have never been exposed to being a finance major and I am sure it will be useful one way or another later on.”

During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?

“The primary way I had myself stand out was by reaching out to random professional individuals, requesting if they would look over my resume for me. This allowed me to have many overviews where I could take all the revisions I received and piece them together into one solid resume.”

What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?

“Ultimately, the professors at Carthage are great, being that they constantly forward new opportunities to us students. Outside of that though, it just takes a little bit of effort from the student to put themselves out there and try to seek opportunities they can potentially be applicable for.”

Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?

“Do your research, network, and don’t be afraid to apply for positions that may not align specifically with your current skill set. Especially if it is an internship.”
