Give three words that sum up your internship experience.
Challenging, Educational, Interesting
How did you learn about your internship?
“I visited the Career Center and they connected me with several internship opportunities. I interviewed for intern positions at three different organizations and ultimately chose to intern at Kenosha United Way.”
Describe your internship.
“My job at my internship is researching and collecting data and statistics about the demographics of Kenosha County. I look at different indicators for income, health, and education and make graphs and charts and write paragraphs that explain the charts and statistics. All of this data will be compiled into a comprehensive report that is to be published for educational purposes for the community. Organizations can look at the report, see the data, and make informed decisions about the poverty level, health and problems with education within the community.”
What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?
“I really enjoy being able to work at my own pace. I meet with my supervisor regularly to check up on my progress and ask questions, but I love that I am allowed to make my own schedule and set my own deadlines. I have a lot of freedom in how I work and complete tasks and that’s something I really enjoy. Sometimes it is difficult to come in, sit at a computer and read and analyze data for five hours a day and I find myself coming up with new ways to keep myself engaged in my research and focused on the project. One of the other challenges is finding the data. I have to look at different sources for data on the different indicators and some statistics are easier to find than others. Spending a few hours looking for one statistic can get frustrating. Sometimes I am unable to find a statistic or piece of data and I have to adapt the report as necessary.”
How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?
“I am hoping to get into the editing and publishing industry, preferably with a small Christian publisher. Many Christian publishers are non-profit so here at Kenosha United Way I am learning a lot about how a small non-profit organization works and how it impacts the community, which is what I would like to do through publishing books.”
During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?
“I drafted a resume, cover letter, and work sample with the Career Center at Carthage. I practiced for my interviews and thought about what questions I might have for my interviewers ahead of time. I demonstrated my work ethic by showing on my resume that I am completing my degree in just three years rather than the usual four. Last, but not least, I dressed professionally and went in to each interview with an open mind.”
What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?
“The Career Center was a huge help to me in my internship search. I did not know where to begin. I told them my career goal and what I was looking for in an internship experience and within a week, I had six or seven opportunities.”
Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?
“Definitely make use of the Career Center. They offer all sorts of services to students looking for internships or jobs.”
