Give three words that sum up your internship experience.

Work, Review, Revise

How did you learn about your internship?

“I received an email from my advisor suggesting that I apply for the Great Lakes Internship Grant. I got connected with my employer through my advisor as well.”

Describe your internship.

“At the Bong Recreation Area I work on designing and refining any printed and digital material the park needs. I meet weekly with the park naturalist to discuss projects and review the work I have done. Because the park does not have any staff members who work on graphics, they rely on me as the graphics intern to design an array of different kinds of material to represent the Richard Bong State Recreation Area. These include signs, brochures, posters, and display pieces.”

What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?

“I enjoy creating graphic material that gets used somewhere other than just my classrooms. Its nice to have real-world experience and see my work get used in the community. It is hard to complete some projects with the limited time during the day, but it’s a challenge I like to overcome.”

How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?

“Working at Bong gives me a good sense of what it is like to work with an employer, particularly one who does not have a background in graphic design. It is teaching me to problem solve all of the issues I come across on my because I don’t have someone with all of the answers near by.”

During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?

“My internship experience was unique because I was not looking for an internship when I received an email telling me about the opportunity at Bong. When I realized that it would fit in my schedule, I quickly emailed back to say that I was interested.”

What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?

“I really utilized Career Services and my advisor when applying for the internship. Everyone is so willing to help to see you succeed and I think that’s a big factor in making the process super easy.”

Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?

“Having an internship is a really good experience. Even though it can be frustrating at times, it just means that I am learning.”
