How did you learn about your internship?

“Corinne Ness reached out to me and told me I was recommended for Great Lakes Career Ready Internship Grant by my department and I immediately jumped at the opportunity. I applied, Career Services sent my resume to Kenosha organizations that had marketing opportunities for me, I interviewed at the Shalom Center, and here I am!”

Describe your internship.

“My internship at the Shalom Center is a marketing position and I have had the pleasure of working on brochures, their quarterly appeal letter, and other various forms/flyers. I collaborate with board members and organizations to plan for and create flyers etc for special events. I also work closely with staff to improve marketing overall and do some work on social media.”

What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?

“I enjoy the people that work here, the skills that I have gained, and the invaluable experience that I have gained working as an intern for this non-profit. The biggest challenge is balancing the internship with a full course load, and extracurricular activities, but it is providing me with a great lesson in time management.”

How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?

“Being a Theatre Performance major, I think that this marketing internship is extremely useful to me because theaters (and employers in general) are always looking for someone with a variety of different experiences. I could now work more easily in an arts administration position or something more behind the scenes. This internship always provided me with experience in a professional office setting.”

During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?

“I made sure that I provided employers with an organized and professional resume. I also made sure that for my interview I was well-prepared, well-dressed, and really put emphasis my skill sets, especially ones that were necessary for a marketing position. Career Services was a big help with both of these, as well as my professors.”

What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?

“Learning new skills and working in an office setting is a lot different than auditioning or waitressing. There is a certain poise that is maintained in an office, and I think that office work taught me a lot about professionalism. I also feel that my computer skills have improved, as well as my public speaking and social skills.”

Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?

“Make sure that you research organizations that you may want to work for, and then send them a resume! You have nothing to lose, and many places in Kenosha are very excited to have the extra help. Try to learn something new. Go for a marketing internship even though you are a Theatre Performance major. It is great to try and learn new skills that can be great resume builders and help you to land a future job.”
