Give three words that sum up your internship experience.

Creative, Developmental, Growth

How did you learn about your internship?

“My roommate works at Hubbard Street as an intern as well.”

Describe your internship.

“I am focusing on three major projects including the design and layout of a new website, creating a brand around the new merchandise line, as well as helping with the design of company marketing materials. I am also an active member on the team and am involved in all department meetings. I also participate in more internal affairs including helping plan exclusive events and assisting with patron and customer relations.”

What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?

“At Hubbard Street I am treated as an equal and I have free reign to experiment creatively with many of the new marketing materials Hubbard Street is producing. It is a very communal environment, so creative feedback is always available. I regularly create designs for the various departments at Hubbard Street, which can be very challenging because each department head has a different idea of what looks good. I have to stick to the guidelines of the brand while also appealing to the desires of each individual department.”

How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?

“In the future I would like to continue in the field of marketing and advertising with my graphic design major. This internship is with a world renowned dance company, so I am able to create designs that are recognized by millions of people. It is also great to be working with a larger company because I interact daily with professionals in my field, and I am also given the opportunity to network with cultured and driven clientele at our events.”

During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?

“During my internship search I was sure to provide a diverse portfolio to each employer to display the various skill sets I have acquired throughout my prior internships. I also spoke to many employers about the entrepreneurial ventures I have been involved in which distinguish me from other designers.”

What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?

“My external connections were the most helpful during my internship search. I reached out to mentors within the Chicago area when searching for an internship and they provided me several different opportunities. I am also very grateful for the assistance and patience of career services and my academic adviser. They were very helpful with keeping me calm during the stressful and abrupt search for an internship as the semester started.”

Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?

“I would advise other students to keep an open mind when searching for an internship. I landed a very different position than what I was originally searching for, but I ended up being extremely happy with it.”
