Internship Position

Sales Intern

Give three words that sum up your internship experience.

Successful, Enjoyable, Second to none

How did you learn about your internship?

“Career Services at Carthage College.”

Describe your internship.

“I began working part time in March during the spring semester and in May I began working full time. In March I focused a lot on training and I worked on a lot of little projects for the sales reps in the office. I did a lot of shadowing and observing of the sales people in the department and learned a lot. Once the summer began, I was able to be more independent and focus more on the actual sales position and less on the training portion.

It was very beneficial that I started working in March because I was able to receive all of that training prior to the summer starting. For the first few weeks of summer, I rode along with the other sales reps when they would visit customers and have their ‘field days’. About half way through the summer, I began having field days by myself and I began selling the products/services that we have on my own.

In summary, my internship was a less intense version of the position of being a full-time sales rep. Part of my internship consisted of a contest between the other sales interns within the north central region of the company, which consists of the five surrounding states of Wisconsin. There were 12 sales interns in this contest. The contest lasted seven weeks and was a competition of the sales intern that could sell the most volume over the course of the seven weeks. I finished the competition in second place, selling $631 in total volume. I had a very successful summer in the amount of volume that I sold, and also how well I performed.”

What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?

“The thing I enjoyed most about the internship was how similar the internship is to the full-time position. I really liked the fact that I would do the same/similar things each day as the full time sales reps. This really gave me a feel for what a full-time position would feel like.

Some of the biggest challenges were that there is/was so much information to learn about the position, company, products/services. There are still many other things that I need to learn and train on and it was difficult at times because I just wanted to know anything and everything about the selling process, products/services, and other things, but it takes a lot of time to fully understand everything.”

How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?

“My internship fits with my long term goals because I will be accepting a full-time position upon graduation in December. I am pleased to say that I enjoyed every second of my internship.  The people that I work with every day are great, the position fits so well with what I enjoy doing, and the company is a great company to work for.”

During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?

“During my internship search, I made myself stand out to employers by using the unique experiences I have gained through school, work, and sports to show that I could be successful and that I was a good fit for the positions I was hoping to receive.”

What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?

“The thing I found most helpful during my internship search process was to really research the companies that you are looking to work for. It was so helpful during the interview process to understand the company that I was trying to receive a position for.  It is very important to know the company’s values, culture, and also general background so that you can see if you are a good fit for the position or not.”

Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?

“Have fun with the internship that you receive. The people I worked with made working enjoyable and fun. It was easy to create relationships with them and made going to work each day that much better. Always have an open mind and learn as much as you can because if you are successful in the position, it can truly benefit your future.”
