To celebrate the month of our multicultural society, Prof. Mimi Yang will give a talk titled, “We are More Similar than Different: A Cross-Cultural Paradigm” at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16 in the Clausen Center, 107.

The American Dream, Confucianism, and the bullfight — what is in common in these seemingly distant and irrelevant symbols/icons? This talk aims to answer the question and make the point that cultures, in spite of all the surface differences and particularities, are mutually reflective, illustrative, and recognizable in the core.

To Prof. Yang, learning and teaching languages is about building and driving vehicles into the core of a culture. Intercultural approaches characterize her teaching and scholarship. She has published numerous essays on Latin American, Spanish, American, and pedagogical themes. She is also the author of the book “Tricultural Personality: Chinese, English, and Hispanic” (Edwin Mellen, 2014).

The lecture is sponsored by Asian American Pacific Coalition, Latinos Unidos, Islamic Group, the Chinese Club, Black Student Union, United Women of Color, Carthage Allies, Japanese Club, and the 10% Society.
