In addition to six days of fine arts events that begin Tuesday, Carthage’s annual Arts and Creativity Festival will bring regional artists, scholars, and arts administrators together for a timely panel discussion on the role of art in public spaces in modern society.

Last year’s clashes over the display of Confederate monuments ignited an ongoing public debate about various artwork across the country. Panelists will discuss how to approach art in public spaces, given the country’s sharply differing views of history and hopes for the future. Who should decide what’s on display in our public spaces, and who pays for it?

This colloquium is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, March 16, in the Campbell Student Union Auditorium. Admission is free.

Other featured events planned during the 2018 Arts and Creativity Festival include:

  • March 16-18: ‘Silent Sky’ performances, 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in Wartburg Theatre (tickets $8 to $14)
  • March 17: The Brahms Project: Solo piano concert by Wael Farouk, 7:30 p.m. in A. F. Siebert Chapel (free)
  • March 18: Carthage Philharmonic concert, 1 p.m. in A. F. Siebert Chapel (free)
