Professor Mimi Yang published in international journal
Modern Languages Professor Mimi Yang has spent her career studying intercultural identity and communication. A fluent speaker and professor of Chinese and Spanish languages, she is also a scholar of literary and cultural theory, as well as international business. She is published widely in these areas. Her most recent article, “Crossing between the Great Wall of China and the ‘Great’ Trump Wall,” has been accepted for publication by Palgrave Communications, an international journal.
In her essay, Prof. Yang examines the historic and metaphoric meanings of cultural walls beginning with the Great Wall of China. The essay argues that the US-Mexico border wall (also known as the Trump Wall) is more a mental and cultural construct than a physical and architectural one. The bitter debate surrounding the Trump Wall dramatizes the need for an evolving approach to 21st Century American cultural identity on both sides of the wall.
On Nov. 22, Prof. Yang presented her work at the University of Costa Rica. She was hopeful that her presentation “opened some intercontinental dialogues” across countries and cultures.
