If you haven’t taken a language placement test, and you plan to register for a course in French, German, or Spanish this spring, you can go online to make an appointment. This test will  determine which language course is best suited to you. Here’s how:

  • Use the same system that we use to make appointments in the Writing Center and choose “Language Placement Tests” on the drop-down menu. If you haven’t used the system before, be sure to start at the “First Visit? Register for an account” link, and then log in to make your language placement appointment.
  • Please make appointments at least 48 hours in advance of the time that you would like to take the test. After you make the appointment, you will be contacted by the placement test administrator to confirm the time and location of your placement test.

Please note that there are no written placement tests for Japanese or Chinese. Students wishing to be placed into those languages should contact Professor Yan Wang (Japanese) or Professor Mimi Yang (Chinese) to arrange for a oral placement interview. Students who would like to take a placement test in Latin or Ancient Greek can contact the chair of the Classics Department, Professor Ben DeSmidt.

Students who would like to receive recognition for languages taken elsewhere should contact the Office of the Registrar or Professor Greg Baer in the Modern Languages Department.
