Congratulations to Chinese major Thomas Gaertig ’18 on winning third place among third year Chinese language students in the 2017 US Midwest Chinese Bridge Speech Contest!

The competition was co-sponsored by the Office of Chinese Language Council International and the Consulate-General of China in Chicago. It was hosted by University of Wisconsin-Madison on April 15.

Thomas Gaertig ’18 with his Chinese language oral instructor He Long and Mr. Hong Lei, Consul General of China in Chicago.To promote Chinese language/culture education and to enhance exchanges and collaborations between Chinese programs at college level, the Confucius Institute and the Office of Chinese Language Council International have set the goal to create a tradition of such contests on the west coast, the east coast, and in the Midwest. This was the first time that Midwestern universities and colleges convened to identify talents and celebrate students’ achievements. Thomas Gaertig’s performance has put Carthage on the map!  

Mr. Hong Lei, Consul General of China in Chicago, emceed the event. He spoke about U.S.-China relations, and encouraged the competitors to play an active role in building a stronger relationship between the two great powers of the 21st century. 

He Long, our Chinese TLE, is Thomas Gaertig’s oral instructor and had coached the student for the competition.
