Professor Jan Owens, along with colleagues Deborah Cowles of Virginia Commonwealth University and Matt Sauber of Western Michigan University, supplied the case study project for the National Sports Forum Case Cup Competition 2017, held in Minneapolis from February 12-14. This master’s degree-level case competition attracted teams from over 25 college and university programs with an interest in sports marketing and management.

The subject of this year’s case concerned the new strategic alliance between the Major League Soccer organization and SeatGeek, an online ticket sales platform. Seatgeek’s features include enhanced levels of specific seat information, secure ticket verification, and related services to deliver higher levels of customer satisfaction than its competitors. Working with SeatGeek and the showcase soccer team, Sporting Kansas City, the authors composed a case competition that required teams to design innovative marketing strategies and tactics to make this alliance a success and a future sales platform for the league in many dimensions.

Jan Owens will give a presentation related to this case at the Midwest Marketing Educational Foundation’s Racom IMC (Integrated Marketing Communications) Roundtable in Chicago on May 4-5. This is a symposium of college and university educators and practitioners in the field.
