Prof. Doug Arion joined the Carthage faculty in 1994. He brought his experience as a scientific researcher and former corporate executive with Science Applications International Corp. to Carthage’s innovative ScienceWorks program, the nation’s first technology entrepreneurship program for undergraduates which he developed and directed.

ScienceWorks has prepared Carthage graduates to be successful and has become a model for other institutions and programs. This type of education has now become more common in academia, particularly in the engineering disciplines, and is slowly making inroads into other departments. With greater pressure being placed on higher education to show employment value for graduates, and to address a wider, more diverse student body, entrepreneurship and innovation education is even more necessary today.

At 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31 in Straz 163, the talk “Preparing Graduates for 21st Century Careers” will describe the history of entrepreneurship education, the current state of the field, the opportunities it presents for students, faculty, and institutions, and the diverse ways in which Carthage is playing a leading role in promoting it in the US and abroad.
