The Carthage Mock Trial Team will travel to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities for its first invitational of the season Oct. 14-16. The team will simulate four trials during the weekend, going against teams from all over the Midwest including Loyola-Chicago, Minnesota, Drake, Macalester, Hamline, and St. Olaf.

This year, the American Mock Trial Association gave the team an employment discrimination case: Riley Winter, the plaintiff, is a prominent professional writer. On Dec. 23, Winter was fired from her job at her magazine company and contends that the termination violated the Midlands Age Discrimination Act. This year’s team will both sue and defend the magazine company, TBD, Inc.

The team hopes to follow up last year’s fourth-place victory after going 6-2 and winning multiple individual awards. After Minnesota, the team plans to travel to Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, and Dubuque, Iowa, before the regional tournament in February.

This year’s team features all new members who are looking to defend last year’s top 48 finish and bid to the National Belltower Championship. The team this year is being student-coached by Brittney Frederick and Hailey McClung, both captains from the national team, as well as Prof. Michael Phegley.
