This fall, interested and qualified students at Carthage will be able to study the Federal Reserve via a two-credit independent study course. The first meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8 in the Troha Boardroom, Clausen Center 207. The course will be open for up to 12 students who will meet weekly to study the Fed and prepare for the Challenge. A team of four to five will be formed from this group to compete in Chicago on Monday, Nov. 21. Other members of the group will be eligible to travel to the Fed and watch the teams compete.

The Fed Challenge is an annual undergraduate competition in which teams of three to five students present their analysis of what the Federal Reserve’s next actions should be to a panel of judges. The judges then question the students on their recommendations and knowledge of the Fed. During the challenge, students interact with staff of the Fed and their peers. The day at the Fed in Chicago includes a luncheon and presentation on careers at the Federal Reserve. The top team from each region goes on to compete in Washington, D.C.

Students in any major may apply, but should have taken or be taking Money & Banking and/or Intermediate Macroeconomics. Students must be interested in economic policy and in enhancing their research and analytical skills. Interested students should contact Professor Lau at clau@carthage.edu.
