Recent graduate Evan Weyrauch ’15 has received a Fulbright Fellowship for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Mr. Weyrauch will spend the upcoming year in Germany as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant.

A native of Rockford, Illinois, Mr. Weyrauch graduated from Carthage with degrees in German and history, and a minor in educational studies. Since graduating in 2015, he has been a resident director and assistant swim coach at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Evan is one of four Carthage students to receive a Fulbright Fellowship for the 2016-2017 academic year. The other three recipients will be announced on The Bridge in the week ahead.

The Fulbright Fellowship in Germany returns Mr. Weyrauch to the country where he spent six months studying abroad in 2014. He said he is looking forward to the opportunity to further engage with German and U.S. cultures.

“I have had many experiences as an educator, mentor, and coach that have reinforced the importance of authentic representation in everyday life,” he wrote in his Fulbright application, “and I will use those experiences to effectively connect with students, which will further their education and challenge their cultural expectations, while at the same time, challenging me.”

He expects to use elements of American culture, such as music and poetry, to bring the English language to life for his students.

Outside of his role as a teacher, he hopes to coach or join a swim team, and join a local band to connect with his community. While at Carthage, he was a member of the Carthage Men’s Swimming Team, and was active as a youth swim coach in Kenosha and Rockford, Illinois. He also worked as a German tutor.

After his time abroad, Mr. Weyrauch plans to pursue a graduate degree with the goal of one day working as a college-level swim coach or professor.

Congratulations to Evan Weyrauch on his Fulbright placement!
