Exercise and Sport Science

The Exercise and Sport Science Department at Carthage prepares students for careers as athletic trainers; health educators; physical education teachers (K-12); health teachers (K-12); coaches; and health, sport and fitness instructors.

Students take courses in health and wellness education, coaching, nutrition, first aid and safety, consumer health issues, psychology, kinesiology and physiology. Students develop an understanding of the history and philosophy of exercise and sport programs, while learning how to best teach, motivate, evaluate and organize sports and fitness activities and programs.

The Department offers majors in Athletic Training and Physical Education, Sport and Fitness Instruction, as well as a minor in school health education, and certification programs for physical education, physical education/special education and athletic coaching.

The Carthage Athletic Training Education Program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education since 2003.

The Exercise and Sport Science Department also offers the courses that all Carthage students must take to meet the Physical Education/Fitness Requirement.
