Equity and Inclusion

Mission Statement

Definition of Diversity

Students work together to solve a problem in a computer science course.Diversity encompasses acceptance and respect which fosters understanding that each individual is unique and different. These differences can exist in the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. It allows the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment, which moves beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.

Diversity should be anchored in the goal to make student success our highest priority by offering a rich array of opportunities where students see themselves as citizens of a culturally diverse society in a globally interdependent community.

Aiming to learn from each other, we reject all forms of prejudice and discrimination toward underrepresented groups. To ensure this, the community will continue to encourage Carthage College to adopt inclusive practices and programs that create opportunity for all. In the classroom, we promote active learning about diversity that allows both students and faculty to effectively acquire cultural competency. Beyond the classroom, we envision a campus community where the goals of “Seeking Truth, Inspiring Service, and Building Strength” can be accomplished in a climate where “Together” all feel valued, respected and safe.
