Those seeking admission to the Master of Education must meet the following qualifications:
- Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree.
- Possession of a valid teaching certificate issued by one of the 50 states, or employment in a profession that is educational in purpose (e.g. nursing, social work, etc.).
- A minimum grade point average of 2.75.

Before candidates may be considered for admission, they must:
- Submit an application, personal statement, and $35 application fee.
- Send official transcripts of all college work. A minimum 2.75 GPA required.
- Provide proof of a valid teaching certificate (for licensed teachers).
- Include two letters of recommendation (Download the Personal Appraisal Form):
- One from a supervisor.
- One from a colleague at your current place of employment, a former professor, or additional supervisor.
- Interview with the Director of the Graduate Program (optional, but recommended).
When the application is complete, the Director of the Graduate Program will send a letter verifying acceptance. Once accepted, students will be assigned to an advisor who will help students select two full-time faculty members to serve on the graduate committee.
In addition to the admission requirements established for all graduate students, international students must:
- Demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Students fulfill the English language requirement when they provide proof of acceptable performance on the TOEFL.
- Submit an official transcript of all previous college course work translated into English.
- Provide evidence, in English, that they earned the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree.
- Submit a U.S. Affidavit of Support form, which provides evidence that an independent source of funding is available for the student.
Prior to admission to candidacy, students may request to apply a maximum of 12 graduate credits earned at Carthage toward the program of study for the Master of Education program. The College may accept 12 credits from another institution if:
- The student earned the credits within the last five years.
- The student completed course work prior to the end of the term or summer session in which Carthage accepts the student’s candidacy.
- The student maintained a “B” average in all transferred course work. The College will not accept “pass” or “credit” work.
- Course work is related to the student’s area of concentration.
- Students may transfer no more than 12 credits into their programs of study before receiving approval from the graduate committee and the Director of the Graduate Program.
