Character Quest

Leadership Development

Carthage encourages students in all majors to participate in the Character Quest Leadership Development program. The program is specially designed for undergraduate students who want to learn how to lead effectively, so they can be influential on campus, in the community, and in their careers.

Character Quest at Carthage offers two leadership development programs: CQ Lead, through which students can earn a certificate in leadership, and CQ Coach, through which students can earn a certificate in coaching.

CQ Lead


CQ Lead is a yearlong leadership and character development program for Carthage sophomores and juniors. It emphasizes personal strength, personal awareness, and discovering and developing your leadership style.

Program components

  • Outdoor learning experience — Participate in teamwork and leadership challenges, such as raft-building and paintball.
  • Classroom discussions — Learn leadership techniques in a classroom setting.
  • Personal coaching — Hone your skills through monthly sessions with Character Quest founder Dean Matthews ’84 and director Derek Matthews ’10.
  • On-campus leadership activities — Take on a leadership role in a student organization.
  • Peer coaching — Serve as a success and engagement coach for first-year Carthage students, further enhancing your leadership skills.

Certification

Students who complete the CQ Lead program will receive a certificate in leadership from Character Quest.

How to apply

Rising sophomores and juniors interested in participating in CQ Lead must be nominated by a professor, staff member, or another student. Nominated students must then apply for and be accepted into the program. The application process occurs in spring. Details will be posted in mid-February.

CQ Coach


CQ Coach trains Carthage sophomores, juniors, and seniors to be Success and Engagement Coaches for first-year students. CQ Coaches work with 4-5 Carthage freshmen each year.

Character Quest coaches led a bike-building event for the freshman class in September 2015. Students teamed up to build new bikes for Kenosha-area children.Program components

  • Coaching skills clinic — Learn how to assist freshmen for enhanced success, academic enrichment, campus engagement, and personal growth.
  • Classroom discussions — Learn leadership techniques in a classroom setting.
  • Freshman success and engagement coaching — Hone your coaching skills by working with 4-5 first-year students.

Certification

Students who complete the CQ Coach program will receive a certificate in coaching from Character Quest.

How to apply

All students heading into their sophomore, junior, and senior years can apply to participate in CQ Coach; a nomination is not required for application. The application process occurs in spring. Details will be posted in mid-February.
