Biography

Heather Carroll joined Carthage College in August 2019 as the Director of the Writing Center, and her role was expanded to include the management of Peer Tutoring in July 2020. Through the management of these aligned offices, she ensures Carthage students have access to individualized and impactful academic support, and writing fellows and peer tutors are provided applicable mentorship and professional development.

Heather has over 20 years of college-level teaching and administrative experience. She has taught English as a second language as well as academic writing and academic success courses in a variety of contexts including community-based programs, two-year colleges, online institutions, a research one university, and an international university through the Peace Corps (Russia, 2000-2001).

Heather is an active member of the International Writing Center Association, the National College Learning Center Association, and both organizations’ regional affiliates. She serves on the Writing Across the Curriculum Committee, the Student Success Team, and the Navigate Leadership Team (a Moon Shot for Equity Committee).

A Wisconsin native, Heather lives in the Milwaukee area with her husband and teenage daughters. She enjoys listening to audiobooks on her drive to campus.

Main responsibilities at Carthage

Heather manages the day-to-day operations and strategic planning of both the Writing Center and Peer Tutoring. She collaborates with faculty, peer educators, and other campus partners to support academic success.

Favorite thing about working at Carthage

Heather was drawn to Carthage for the sense of community it offers as well as the celebration of risk and failure. Celebrating our failures, picking ourselves back up, and trying again is powerful. Carthage invests in helping students learn to do just that by providing strong academic support across departments. This is truly a place to grow as a scholar and individual.
