Carthage College seeks an Assistant Director of Residential Life to assist in the operation and oversight of housing and residential life operations. Under the direction of the Director of Residential Life, this position is 12-month, nonexempt, live-on, with responsibility for supervising the day-to-day community development and operations of six residential units housing approximately 465 students. The Assistant Director supports the overall operation of the department and approximately 1,700 bed residential facilities. This position works closely with other College personnel to address the social, developmental, and academic needs of students. The Assistant Director will also participate in a campus-wide duty rotation.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Supervise two Senior Resident Assistants and up to 12 Resident Assistants
  • Participate in on-call response and crisis management across campus
  • Assist in advising up to two Residence Hall-based student organizations and help to ensure their success
  • Plan and oversee the selection of up to 60 student staff members including Resident Assistants and Senior Resident Assistants
  • Lead the Residential Life team in developing and operating robust and successful student staff training and in-services
  • Work with students, individually and in groups, to resolve concerns related to student success and retention
  • Aid the Director of Residential Life in maintaining adequate data for dashboards and occupancy projections; track data for departmental dashboards
  • Serve as a conduct-hearing officer for Community Code and Residential Life policy violations; serve as a university conduct officer and aid in Title IX compliance
  • Regularly update the residential life staff website with pertinent resources

Minimum requirements

  • Master’s degree is required
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in Residential Life is required
  • Prior live-on experience is a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with employees, students, and faculty members
  • Ability to use a personal computer and web browser, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Mail, and Carthage portal.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use a variety of standard office equipment such as a telephone and computer keyboard.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations in order to maintain a budget
  • Ability to travel occasionally to conduct college business
