The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) in the Natural Sciences was created to provide students with the opportunity to be active participants in an independent research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students in the program receive a stipend and room and board on campus for their work during the summer

Students and faculty participating in the program will gather once each week for lunch and presentations of research progress reports. At the end of the program, students will present the results of their research at a poster session. The entire Carthage community is invited to view and discuss the projects at this poster session. Each student participant will also be expected to write a project report at the end of the program.

The selection process for this program is competitive. Each student must identify a research mentor prior to the submission of his or her application. The selection committee will only consider complete applications. Applications for the Natural Science SURE program are due by noon on Wednesday, March 28.

All Natural Science SURE applications should be submitted through the online process using the link for studying one of the natural sciences (biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, geography and earth science, mathematics, neuroscience, or physics and astronomy).

The application has three parts:

1. Student Application
2. Mentor Application
3. Faculty Recommendation

The selection committee will evaluate applications on the basis of the academic strength and research potential of each candidate and on the viability of the proposed project.

Selection announcements will be made early in April. Any questions can be directed to Professor Aaron Trautwein, Professor of Mathematics, via email.
