What’s better than learning from one stellar professor in the Communication and Digital Media field for a semester? Learning from three.

In Fall 2016, three faculty members from the Communication and Digital Media Department are teaching the introductory communication course, Communication Survey.

“Communication Survey was born in a CDM faculty brainstorming session, which goes to show you the importance of brainstorming!” says Prof. Laura Huaracha, an associate professor of communication and digital media and chair of the department. “We wanted to introduce students to a wide variety of communication contexts, theories, and experiences while incorporating the research and expertise of all CDM faculty.”

The course will be taught by professors Laura Huaracha, Lynn Brownson, and Kimberly Kulovitz. However, all faculty who teach in the Communication and Digital Media Department will speak as guest lecturers, providing students with a wide introduction to specific subjects.

Students will:

  • Learn the skills and competencies expected of all communication and digital media graduates
  • Be guided in ePortfolio creation
  • Hear from alumni in the field
  • Work specifically within groups in their major
  • Practice digital photography
  • Explore scholarship and internship opportunities
  • Strengthen industry-specific writing skills

Though the class is larger than the 17 students you will find in the average Carthage class, students will receive personalized attention; one of the three instructors will be their lead instructor.

“From this course, students will leave with a plan for what their four years will entail within the CDM Department,” Prof. Huaracha says. “It is really a unique experience, and we look forward to our second year with the course.”
