Calefax Reed Quintet will perform at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 13, in the A. F. Siebert Chapel.
Calefax Reed Quintet is a Dutch ensemble comprised of five reed instrumentalists: Oliver Boekhoorn (oboe), Ivar Berix (clarinet), Raaf Hekkema (saxophone), Jelte Althuis (bass clarinet), and Alban Wesly (bassoon). Praised for virtuosic musicality, masterful arrangements, and innovative stage presentations, the Calefax Reed Quintet has spent the last three decades creating music that has earned acclaim throughout the Netherlands. Their performance career is only one element of the group’s success. Calefax is also known for publishing music, available with the notation, “The Calefax Edition.” The group has commissioned composers of all genres to create music for reed quintet, borrowing elements of classical, jazz, and improvisational music. The Calefax Reed Quintet brings chamber music into the modern era with a distinct pop mentality backed by their classical roots.
