Not quite sure about your major yet? No need to worry. We’re here to help! Carthage has more than 50 areas of study, majors, and special programs. We’ll make sure you find the combination that works best for you. Just be sure to take time to explore your interests and allow yourself to be curious.
What resources does Carthage provide for undecided students?
Every incoming first-year student is assigned a First Year Academic Advisor. Students and advisors will meet once a week for a seminar-style course in the fall, and several times on a one-on-one basis. These conversations will center on your interests, values, skills, and abilities, and your advisor will help guide you toward courses that match.
Your advisor can also introduce you to the awesome staff in Career Services, who can help you to discover your unique talents and how these relate to potential career paths. Career Services can set you up with volunteer opportunities and internships to help you dig deeper and pursue your passions.
If I don’t have a major, what classes will I take my first semester?
The Carthage curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary study as part of a strong liberal arts education. The Carthage Plan was created to ensure that students would gain experience in a wide variety of disciplines. As you’re exploring your major options, you’ll get a great start on the general education requirements in subject areas that match your interests, values, skills, and abilities.
When should I declare my major?
While there is no specific timeline for declaring a major, it’s ideal to be at least fairly certain by the end of your first year at Carthage. This will allow you to delve into your major coursework as you progress as a Carthage student.
Once I’ve decided, how do I declare my major?
You can always work with your First Year Advisor in officially declaring your major, or you can do so through our Registrar’s Office. And don’t worry — we understand that even after you declare your major, you may change your mind (it happens more frequently than you may think), and that’s OK! We’ll help you through your decision process and get you on track!
